President Dinald E. Ball, Secretary August J. Saury

On November 5, 1953 Mount Vernon Kiwanis was officially chartered with 35 members. The charter night program was held at the Belle Haven Country Club. The General Chairmen of the event were Clarence Gosnell of Mount Vernon and Marvin Sims of Alexandria. Accepting the Charter for Mount Vernon was Donald Ball, the first President of Mount Vernon Kiwanis. The other officers of Mount Vernon were Clarence Gosnell, First Vice President, Eugene Olmi, Second Vice President, Walter McClanahan, Treasurer, and August Saury, Secretary. The Directors were Walter Crain, Richard Hardie, Bruce Harris, William Kress, John Kurtz, Preston Millard, and Alexander Robertson. Mount Vernon Kiwanis is chartered to provide service and financial assistance to the youth, the elderly, the needy, the local community, and to the nation. It does so without regard to race, color, creed, gender, nationality, or economic status.

Mount Vernon Kiwanis had its beginning with a small group of businessmen who were members of the Alexandria Junior Chamber of Commerce during the late 1940's and early 1950's. They were a separate luncheon club at the time and met weekly at a restaurant named the Penn Daw on Route 1. Cooper Dawson was the owner and he was a member of the group. Also among this group was Clarence Gosnell, a land developer and home builder, who was community minded and thought it might be a good idea for this small group to form an organization of their own. Since most members were either living or working in the Mount Vernon area, they thought the organization should have Mount Vernon in its name. They also wanted the organization to be community and service oriented. This led the group to the Kiwanis International service organization which offered much of what they were looking for. After approaching some key Kiwanians in Alexandria, the Alexandria Kiwanis Club offered to sponsor and to charter this group of men as the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club.
